Manori Islands with the Manori beach and the Gorai Beach is seperated from the mainland only by a small creek and cant be called an island in all its essense, still the place just 40 km from one of the busiest and most crowded cities in the world; Mumbai, has maintained a quaint rustic charm about itself and maintained itself as an island away from the all pervasive urbanization of its neighbours!
Manori beach is about two kms long and fringed with palm trees and rows of seafront hotels. Both Gorai and Manori are rocky beaches linked by a rocky headland and accessed across a small creek. Swimming is not advised at the of Manori beaches. Manori and the nearby Gorai are quaint hamlets that faintly remind one of Goa with roadside chapels and churches and women in 'frocks'. Manori is also known for the numerous all night parties that happen here.
Global Vipassana Pagoda..
The world's largest hollow stone masonry structure containing relics of the Buddha, the Vipassana Pagoda is also the world's largest stone dome built without any supporting pillars. Vipassana meditation courses are held free of charge at the meditation centre that is situated in the Global Vipassana Pagoda complex. There is no entry fee to see the Global Vipassana Pagoda.
Malad on the western line is the nearest railway station from Manori, from where you can take a taxi to the beaches however the better option is to get a ferry from the Marve beach across the Marve creek to reach Manori in less than 20 minutes and save a drive over 35 km Mira road! There are regular ferries and motor boats available from Marve which will drop you off at Manori.
The beach is the main attraction in Manori islands however there are a few more places that you can visit in Manori during a weekend break from the city. There is a Shiva temple - Samudreshwar near the ferry drop off point and the math's of Gagangiri maharaj and his desciple Swami Gagananand Maharaj. Esselworld and Water Kingdom is near Manori Islands where you could have a lot of fun!!
